Chelocrinus was named by Meyer (1837) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Tr Carn-l Sepkoski's reference number: 980]. It is not extant. Its type is Encrinites schlottheimii.

It was reranked as Encrinus (Chelocrinus) by Beyrich (1856).

It was assigned to Encrinus by Beyrich (1856); to Encrinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Encrinidae by Hagdorn (2004) and Hess and Messing (2011).
