Bombacacidites protofoveoreticulatus was named by Jaramillo and Dilcher (2001) [Type locality: Piñalerita Creek near Sabanalarga. PaleoDB number: 28434.
Paratypes: UFP 7, 20 x 89.3; UFP 15, 18.3 x 95; UFP 9 10.8 x 108.4.]. It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is UFP 7, 8 x 98.8, a microspore (Pollen grain).
