Apiculatasporites obscurus was named by Jaramillo and Dilcher (2001) [Paratype: UFP 15, 3.6 x 91.9. Type locality: Piñalerita Creek near to sabanalarga. PaleoDB number 28563. Dimensions in equatorial view.]. It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is UFP 15, 21.2 x 92.1, a microspore.
