Cravenechinus was named by Hawkins (1946) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is the type genus of Cravenechinidae.

It was assigned to Cravenechinidae by Hawkins (1946) and Kier (1966); and to Echinocystitoida by Sepkoski (2002).
