Lepidocentrus was named by Müller (1857) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi C Vise Sepkoski's reference number: 577,956,1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Lepidocentrus eifelianus. It is the type genus of Lepidocentridae.
It was assigned to Lepidocentridae by Kier (1966) and Boczarowski (2001); and to Echinocystitoida by Sepkoski (2002).
