Pronechinus was named by Kier (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Pronechinus anatoliensis.

It was assigned to Echinocystitoida by Sepkoski (2002); to Echinocystitidae by Kier (1966) and Kroh (2010); and to Proterocidaridae by Thompson and Ewin (2018).
