Proterocidaris was named by de Koninck (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: C l C Pn]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Proterocidaridae.
It was assigned to Echinocystitidae by Kier (1966); to Echinocystitoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proterocidaridae by Thompson and Ewin (2018).
