Taxonomy
Histocidaris was named by Mortensen (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 956]. It is extant. Its type is Porocidaris elegans. It is the type genus of Histocidarina.

It was assigned to Histocidarinae by Fell (1966); to Cidaroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rhabdocidaridae by Donovan et al. (2005).
