Phyllacanthus was named by Brandt [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm R Sepkoski's reference number: 577]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Cidaridae by Cooke (1941); to Rhabdocidarinae by Nisiyama (1966), Fell (1966) and Kier (1980); to Cidarinae by Donovan (1993); and to Cidaroida by Sepkoski (2002).
