Prionocidaris was named by Agassiz (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 865]. It is extant. Its type is Cidarites pistillaris.
It was assigned to Stylocidarinae by Nisiyama (1966); to Rhabdocidarinae by Fell (1966); to Phyllacanthina by Smith (1995); to Cidaroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cidaridae by Smith (1991), Ragaini (1994) and Donovan et al. (2005).
