Gryllus (Mantis) religiosus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Mantis.

It was recombined as Gryllus religiosus by Scopoli (1763); it was recombined as Mantis religiosa by Linnaeus (1767) and Beier (1967).
