Taxonomy
Stereocidaris was named by Pomel (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut R Sepkoski's reference number: 865]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Stereocidaridae.

It was reranked as Temnocidaris (Stereocidaris) by Smith (1991), Donovan (1993) and Smith (2009).

It was assigned to Stereocidaridae by Fell (1966); to Cidaroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Temnocidaris by Smith (1991), Donovan (1993) and Smith (2009).
