Temnocidaris was named by Cotteau (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 865]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Cidaridae by Smith (1991); to Cidarinae by Donovan (1993); to Cidaroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stereocidarinae by Fell (1966), Geys (1990) and Smith (2009).
