Heterodiadema was named by Cotteau (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Camp]. It is the type genus of Heterodiadematidae.

It was assigned to Diadematidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915); to Hemicidaridae by Fell and Pawson (1966); to Heterodiadematidae by Smith (1995); to Hemicidaroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pseudodiadematidae by Berndt (2003).
