Leoniorthis rubeli was named by Hints (2014) [Old holotype number: Br 2666a
?1900 Orthis semicircularis Eichwald, mut.; Wysogórski, pl. 8.
1961 Cyrtonotella semicircularis (Eichwald); Rubel, pp. 180-182, pl. 42, figs 19 (non Terebratula semicircularis Eichwald, 1829).]. Its type specimen is GIT 125-93, a valve, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Putilovo Quarry, Obukhovo Fm., which is in a Kunda reef, buildup or bioherm wackestone in the Obukhovo Formation of the Russian Federation.
