Arbacia was named by Gray (1835) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R]. It is extant. Its type is Echinus lixula. It is the type genus of Arbaciidae.
It was assigned to Arbaciidae by Grant and Hertlein (1938), Cooke (1941), Fell and Pawson (1966) and Linder et al. (1988); and to Phymosomatoida by Sepkoski (2002).
