Arbacia was named by Gray (1835) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R]. It is extant. Its type is Echinus lixula. It is the type genus of Arbaciidae, Arbaciadae.

It was assigned to Arbaciidae by Fell and Pawson (1966) and Linder et al. (1988); and to Phymosomatoida by Sepkoski (2002).
