Taxonomy
Nautilus egregius was named by Pia (1914). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Denningwaldes, near Adnet, which is in a Pliensbachian carbonate limestone in Austria.

It was recombined as Cenoceras egregius by Kummel (1956).
