Nautilus mariani was named by Gemmellaro (1911). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rocche Rosse, near Galati, which is in a Pliensbachian carbonate limestone in Italy.
It was recombined as Cenoceras mariani by Kummel (1956).
