Gauthieria was named by Lambert (1891) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-l T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 577]. Its type is Cyphosoma radiatum.

It was assigned to Phymosomatidae by Cooke (1959), Fell and Pawson (1966), Geys (1980) and Geys (1982); and to Phymosomatoida by Sepkoski (2002).
