Glyptocidaris was named by Agassiz (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 942]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Phymosomatidae by Nisiyama (1966), Fell and Pawson (1966) and Linder et al. (1988); and to Phymosomatoida by Sepkoski (2002).
