Taxonomy
Goniopygus was named by Agassiz (1838) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-u T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 942]. It is the type genus of Goniopygidae.

It was assigned to Hemicidaridae by Clark and Twitchell (1915); to Arbacioida by Donovan (1993); to Goniopygidae by Smith (1995); to Phymosomatoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Arbaciidae by Nisiyama (1966), Fell and Pawson (1966), Geys (1981) and Berndt (2003).
