Callopora elegantula was named by Hall (1851). It is the type species of Hallopora.

It was recombined as Hallopora elegantula by Bassler (1911), Bassler (1953), Jiménez-Sánchez (2009), Ernst et al. (2015) and Ernst et al. (2019).
