Taxonomy
Stomechinus was named by Desor (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 577]. Its type is Echinus bigranularis. It is the type genus of Stomechiens.

It was assigned to Pedinidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915); to Stomechinidae by Fell and Pawson (1966) and Linder et al. (1988); and to Phymosomatoida by Sepkoski (2002).
