Leptelloidea derfelensis was named by Jones (1928) [Melou (1971) selected SM A16671 as the electrotype.]. Its type specimen is SM A16671 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Leptellina derfelensis by Whittington and Williams (1955); it was recombined as Leangella (Leptestiina) derfelensis by Cocks (2010); it was recombined as Leptestiina derfelensis by Bates (1968) and Liljeroth et al. (2017).
