Lytechinus was named by Agassiz (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 577]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Echinidae by Grant and Hertlein (1938) and Cooke (1941); to Temnopleuroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Toxopneustidae by Fell and Pawson (1966), Linder et al. (1988) and Smith (2009).
