Leptaena (Leptagonia) ungula was named by McCoy (1851).

It was recombined as Strophomena ungula by Davidson (1871); it was recombined as Kiaeromena ungula by Harper and Brenchley (1993); it was recombined as Kiaeromena (Kiaeromena) ungula by Cocks (2010).
