Taxonomy
Plaesiomys strophomenoides was named by Raymond (1905). It is the type species of Valcourea.

It was recombined as Plaesiomys (Valcourea) strophomenoides by Raymond (1911); it was recombined as Valcourea strophomenoides by Cooper (1956) and Liljeroth et al. (2017).
