Syntrophia multicosta was named by Hudson (1905).

It was recombined as Clitambonites multicosta by Raymond (1906); it was recombined as Clitambonites multicostus by Raymond (1911); it was recombined as Vellamo multicosta by Schuchert and Cooper (1932); it was recombined as Atelelasma multicosta by Cooper (1956); it was misspelled as Atelelasma multicostatus by King (1964).
