Taxonomy
Strongylocentrotus was named by Brandt (1835) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant. Its type is Echinus droebachiensis. It is the type genus of Strongylocentrotidae.

It was assigned to Strongylocentrotidae by Fell and Pawson (1966); and to Echinoida by Sepkoski (2002).
