Tripneustes was named by Agassiz (1841) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R ]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Echinidae by Kew (1920), Grant and Hertlein (1938) and Cooke (1941); to Echinoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Toxopneustidae by Nisiyama (1966), Fell and Pawson (1966) and Smith (2009).
