Pliobolia was named by Pomel (1872) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti T Mi-u-l Sepkoski's reference number: 698]. It is not extant. Its type is Pliobolia vermiculata.

It was assigned to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Azoricinae by Finks et al. (2004).
