Exochellinae was named by Bassler (1935). It is extant. Its type is Exochella.

It was reranked as the family Exochellidae by Brown (1952), Bassler (1953), Brown (1956), Brown (1958), Pouyet (2000) and Bock (2006).

It was assigned to Schizoporellidae by Canu and Bassler (1935); to Ascophora by Brown (1952), Bassler (1953), Brown (1956), Brown (1958) and Pouyet (2000); and to Cheilostomata by Bock (2006).
