Echinoneus was named by Leske (1778) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 956]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Holectypoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Echinoneidae by Grant and Hertlein (1938), Cooke (1942), Morishita (1964), Nisiyama (1966), Wagner and Durham (1966) and Donovan et al. (2005).
