Fordonia lawsoni was named by Hooker (2013). Its type specimen is NHMUK.M64561, a tooth (RP4), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ferry Cliff, which is in a Ypresian terrestrial horizon in the Suffolk Pebble Beds Formation of the United Kingdom.
