Astriclypeus was named by Verrill (1867) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Astriclypeidae.

It was assigned to Astriclypeidae by Durham (1955) and Durham (1966); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
