Bellerophon contortus was named by d'Eichwald (1856). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Bucania contorta by Reed (1921); it was recombined as Megalomphala contorta by Ulrich and Scofield (1897), Koken and Perner (1925), Knight (1941), Knight et al. (1960), Rohr (1980), Peel (1991), Ebbestad (1999), Ebbestad (1999) and Wagner (2023).
