Kewia was named by Nisiyama (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u T Plio-l].

It was assigned to Echinarachniidae by Durham (1955), Durham (1966), Wagner (1974) and Linder et al. (1988); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
