Laganum was named by Link (1807) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Laganes.

It was assigned to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Laganidae by Durham (1966), Kosnik (2002) and Smith (2009).
