Mellita was named by Agassiz (1841) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Echinidae by Holmes (1860); to Scutellidae by Grant and Hertlein (1938); to Scutellidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915), Kew (1920) and Cooke (1942); to Mellitidae by Durham (1955) and Durham (1966); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
