Mellita was named by Agassiz (1841) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Mellitidae.

It was assigned to Mellitidae by Durham (1966); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
