Holocystites scutellatus was named by Hall (1864). Its type specimen is AMNH 2019a and is a 3D body fossil.

Synonyms
  • Holocystites jolietensis was named by Miller (1882). Its type specimen is CAS 2538 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Joliet, which is in a Clinton carbonate dolomite in the Joliet Formation of Illinois.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Holocystites scutellatus by Paul (1971).
