Nipponaster was named by Durham (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi T Plio-l Sepkoski's reference number: 956]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Echinarachniidae by Durham (1966); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
