Scaphechinus was named by Agassiz (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R Sepkoski's reference number: 577]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Dendrasteridae by Durham (1955) and Durham (1966); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
