Scutella was named by Lamarck (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l T Mi-u-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Scutellidae by Clark (1904), Durham (1953), Durham (1966) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
