Scutella was named by Lamarck (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l T Mi-u-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Scutellidae by Grant and Hertlein (1938); to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Scutellidae by Clark (1904), Clark and Twitchell (1915), Kew (1920), Clark and Arnold (1923), Nagao (1928), Jackson (1937), Turner (1938), Durham (1953), Durham (1955), Durham (1966) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
