Tarphypygus was named by Arnold and Clark (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 942,956].

It was assigned to Fibulariidae by Durham (1955), Durham (1966) and Donovan (1993); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
