Kennatherium was named by Mellett and Szalay (1968). It is the type genus of Kennatheriinae.
It was assigned to Didymoconidae by Mellett and Szalay (1968); and to Kennatheriinae by Lopatin (2006) and Missiaen et al. (2013).
