Pleurotomaria subpenea was named by Netchaev (1894). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Baylea subpenea by Mazaev (2015), Mazaev (2016) and Mazaev (2020); it was recombined as Sokella subpenea by Wagner (2023).
