Tubipora catenularia was named by Linnaeus (1767).
It was recombined as Halysites catenularia by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1854), Billings (1866), Twenhofel (1928) and Klaamann (1966); it was misspelled as Halysites catenulatus by Etheridge (1878); it was recombined as Halysites catenularius by Buehler (1955), Hill (1981) and Berkowski and Zapalski (2018).
