Platipygus was named by de Loriol (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi]. Its type is Platipygus posthumum.

It was corrected as Platypygus by Smith (2001).

It was assigned to Cassiduloidea by Kier (1962); to Faujasiidae by Chiesa et al. (1995); and to Cassiduloida by Kier (1966), Smith (2001) and Sepkoski (2002).
